En 1972, Andrea Nelli, jeune étudiant italien, découvre lors d' un voyage à New York le graffiti des pionniers. Il rencontre notamment COCO 144, qui lui explique les codes du mouvement encore naissant. Fasciné par cette discipline, il y retourne plusieurs fois jusqu'à publier une thèse sur le sujet en 1978.
